Biodiversity Hot Spot

The Gravity Discovery Centre is located on DBCA land and the surrounding bush land is untouched and in its original state. Nothing has changed for thousands of years. As a result, we have the most amazing variety of fauna and flora and are internationally recognised as a biodiversity hot spot.

The wildflowers delight us with a spectacular display of colour every spring, when our whole bush just seems to spring to life. However, the most beautiful and delicate plants and animals can be found all year around. The stunning yellow Morrison springs to life in November, with the stunning display lasting through to mid January.

The eco-system of the Gravity Discovery Centre and Observatory is largely untouched and as such the wildflower season is spectacular. The plants here, on site, are a representation of the large number of species found more generally on the coastal sandplains North and South of Perth.

Western Australia is home to 12,000 species of Wildflowers, with 65 of these being identified on site at The Gravity Discovery Centre and Observatory. The 65 species have been photographed and the photos are on display in the Biodiversity Gallery. Aboriginal names, scientific names and common names have been identified where possible. There are Cyads, Monoctyledons and Dicotyledons.

The Aboriginals of Yued country, on which the Gravity Discovery Centre and Observatory is located, have relied on the local eco-system and acquired a vast knowledge and many uses for the plants, over thousands of years.

The orchids here on-site are very special. We have spider, cowslips, purple enamels, red beaks, shirts and greenhoods just to name a few.
